Environmental Engineer, Compliance/ Air

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER, COMPLIANCE/AIR

This role will work with the Vandenberg EHS lead to run the site’s environmental programs for Falcon launch and processing at Vandenberg Space Force Base. The engineer will work in a cross functional environment to maintain various monitoring programs, as well as provide technical expertise on design reviews and operational plans. The ideal candidate is highly skilled with both environmental and occupational safety fields and works well in a fast-paced environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Maintain and improve environmental programs at SpaceX’s Vandenberg, CA location.
• Maintain compliance with all applicable regulations established by EPA, RCRA, DOT, CUPA, RWQCB, SBCAPCD, and other applicable California and federal regulatory policies.
• Use continuous inventory outputs to prepare, quality-check, and submit Tier II and TRI filings on schedule; archive calculations and submission packages.
• Maintain the Hazardous Materials Management Plan (HMMP/HMBP), CUPA hazardous-materials inventories, and CERS / Tier II business-plan inputs.
• Coordinate and manage contractors for permitting and environmental testing. Review and maintain reports and other relevant records from assessments and permitting activities.
• Assist in planning for changes in physical facilities, reviewing new or modified equipment, and new programs to meet regulatory and permitting requirements.
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with federal, state, and county regulators.
• Develop and maintain positive and close working relationships with engineering teams across the site.
• Work with process owners on equipment/process buy-off and high-hazard chemical operations as they affect air, waste, or HMMP; coordinate source tests and field work with consultants.
• Support NEPA documentation, biological monitoring duties, and landing/marine debris mitigation requirements.
• Perform internal audits and inspections of all environmental programs and recordkeeping; drive corrective actions with operations, facilities, and launch stakeholders.
• Support the EHS team on safety related initiatives and programs as needed.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree.
• 3+ years of professional experience operating or building environmental compliance programs in an industrial, aerospace, DoD, or manufacturing setting.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, environmental science/management, chemical engineering, or related field.
• 5+ years in California environmental compliance, preferably at an aerospace, launch, or federal facility, owning environmental programs.
• Experience with utilizing AI for process optimization and automation of recordkeeping tasks.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience handling highly technical data and technical data interpretation.
• Track record of successful analysis, interpretation, and application of rules and regulations towards practical solutions.
• Able to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment, including frequent interactions with other engineers, managers, federal, state and county agencies. Ability to handle many projects at once, prioritize work, and work efficiently.
• Highly self-motivated and able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment with ongoing drive for continuous improvement in all aspects of work.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay Range:
Level 1: $95,000.00 - $125,000.00
Level 2: $110,000.00 - $150,000.00

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
