Staff Frontend Engineer

An overview of this role

As a Staff Frontend Engineer on the Core DevOps team, you'll provide technical leadership across your team and adjacent teams. You'll solve complex frontend problems, deliver large features with minimal guidance, and improve the architecture and standards that help teams move faster without compromising quality.

You'll work with product, design, engineering managers, and engineers across product groups to shape product experiences and frontend architecture for a global platform. This includes how teams use agentic artificial intelligence in engineering workflows and user experiences.

At GitLab, we build an all-remote, artificial intelligence-powered DevSecOps platform. You'll help shape product experiences and frontend architecture that enable everyone to contribute to and co-create the software that powers our world.

What you’ll do

• Lead the technical design and delivery of large, complex frontend initiatives across multiple teams.
• Drive frontend platform, design system, and shared architecture strategy for long-term scalability.
• Define and improve standards for versioning, testing, documentation, accessibility, security, performance, and maintainability.
• Lead modernization of a monolith or legacy frontend architecture toward modular, reusable, and independently deployable systems.
• Establish versioned module or host contracts and build, test, deploy, release, and rollback practices for safe operations.
• Create shared patterns for dependency management, design system integration, observability, error isolation, and performance budgets.
• Guide technical direction through clear written proposals and architectural leadership. Partner with product and engineering leaders on platform roadmaps, technical debt, and investment trade-offs.
• Mentor senior and intermediate engineers. Establish guardrails for artificial-intelligence-assisted and agentic workflows that protect code quality, security, privacy, and evaluation standards.

What you’ll bring

• A sustained record of technical leadership across teams or a broad product area.
• Deep frontend architecture and production experience in complex web applications.
• Experience scaling or governing a design system, frontend platform, or shared component architecture.
• Experience with modular frontend architecture in production, such as package encapsulation, Web Components, frontend islands, runtime composition, or an equivalent architecture.
• Experience creating alignment without formal authority through clear written proposals and decision records.
• Experience balancing user outcomes, delivery speed, technical health, and long-term platform investment.
• Experience mentoring engineers and shaping standards through code review and documentation, including evaluating and improving artificial-intelligence-assisted or agentic engineering workflows.
• Helpful, but not required: experience with Vue, React, Angular, TypeScript, or JavaScript; PostgreSQL, Redis, or object storage; representational state transfer or GraphQL application programming interfaces; Kubernetes, Google Kubernetes Engine, Docker, or Google Cloud Platform; and observability tools such as Prometheus or Sentry.

About the team

On the Core DevOps team, we own core repository capabilities, from Git command-line operations to web-based code exploration. We develop new features and platforms, improve existing capabilities, and improve maintainability, accessibility, performance, and workflows for teams using artificial-intelligence-assisted development tools.
